I think I am still in the C&C family, my newly acquired Baltic 39, 1978, carries C&C hull markings due to the source of the design. Sold my 35-1 in May with a flurry of calls and emails attesting to the great qualities of that design.
We returned a week ago from Martha's Vineyard. A great sail out from Branford Ct to Block Island the first day with spinnaker set. Second day on to Menemsha, no crab catching but lots of lobster and clam eating from Larsen's fish market on the dock. Three days of deserted beaches on Menemsha bight and then on to Newport for the 4th and fireworks. Luck prevailed for the return from Newport to Westbrook, CT on the 5th with a North wind 10-15 and a nice reach all of the way with the tide in our favor. Probably my best week of sailing ever. Tides and winds seemed to carry us to each port. On the 6th we had the only non-sailing day with a 3 hour motor from Westbrook home to Branford. The Baltic is a great sailing vessel, particularly on the wind, a simple rig, lots of deck space, and very sea kindly. Our shakedown cruise was from its previous home in Falmouth ME to Branford CT, via the outside arm of Cape Cod with the first stop in Nantucket. It was a very cold sail through the night with heavy fog and winds 10-15 knots. We were on the wind and did not tack until we were just off of Provincetown. Around 2 am the depth went from 450 ft to 24 ft, a big scare and the conclusion that we had whales under us on and off for about 4 hours. Thankfully they did not breach or scratch their backs on us. A great sail under very trying conditions, with 2 sailors and 2 non-sailors, so watch on, watch off between 2. Fortunately, the mate was a 22 yr old former heavy wt. rower, very tough and a good sailor. We sailed almost 30 hours from Thursday to Friday of Memorial weekend to arrive in Nantucket on the eve of the arrival of the Figawy race. As luck would have it we were leaving just as the first of the fleet was arriving with somewhere around 300 sailors. I am sure Saturday night there was not a seat in a restaurant or a shower on land to be had. This winter will see a lot of needed work on this old but beautiful and sound vessel. I would be thankful for any who have a source to recommend for teak decking or teak lumber. I have the machinery to mill it. I will be replacing the whole deck and then on to the rod rigging, and then a new main, number 3 and storm sail. Fortunately, the Yanmar has less than 600 hours on it and the sail drive is in excellent condition. The RULE MATE 1100 has what the manufacturer calls "solid state water sensing technology that eliminates the need for a separate float switch". Pumps are generally indestructable. Switches should last multiple seasons. I would do a separate switch or a pump with a replaceable switch. Had a great sail across the Bay to Rock Hall and a better sail back on Sunday. Nice to have a slippery bottom and received several compliments on the paint job. Back to the boat for some crabbing today and then to Atlantic City Race Week this coming weekend. I put a small 500gph with a built in switch in the lowest part of the bilge and then installed a large pump on platform. Didn't want the large pump to cycle on and off trying to pump the bilge dry. I also reduced the outlet hose on the small pump to 1/2" and placed a loop in the hose after it exits the bilge to reduce back flow. The small pump will get the bilge almost dry, and it rarely comes on since I have very little back flow to refill the bilge at the end of a pump cycle. Let's you know of systemic flow problems and "omigod we're taking on water too fast" problems. Also be sure primary pump exits on port side and not amidships on starboard side. Didn't happen but I changed after realizing I could have give a fellow BYC member a face full of Corsair bilge whilst being picked up on the launch. Ugh. 1981 40-2 David F.
