The new Firefox is codenamed Firefox Quantum. It depreciates older methods and uses WebExtension for its addons. It is an extreme change and it has been coming for 3 years with plenty of warning.
I've tried it briefly on Windows 10 by using Firefox Nightly. It does radically improve performance. I switched back to current Firefox planning to hold on the last 56 version until I could get a good set of addons, either upgraded or replaced. If you want to thoroughly delay this, you can use Firefox Extended Support Release, currently 52.5.0, either from your package manager, your distro release, or from Mozilla. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ You can get an idea of which of your addons are non-legacy and already upgraded to Firefox Quantum by going to the Addons page: about:addons Any marked with a yellow "LEGACY" tag will be disabled under Firefox 57 and after. Currently, these major addons are good for FF 57: Ghostery HTTPS Everywhere Privacy Badger Reddit Enhancement Suite Social Fixer for Facebook uBlock Origin I'm waiting for a while to see if these critical addons upgrade or if I can find a substitute.
