I don't think it matters whether or not the motherboard sound is turned off for the USB sound to work. The USB sound device will show up as another sound option in the sound settings and must be selected for sound to work. Turning sound off on the motherboard should reduce the number of sound options when selecting which device to use to output sound. Mine has headphone plug which I do not use much but it works fine. I normally drive some Logitech speakers which also works fine. Greg

Should be fine for my needs; using stereo. I am curious: how would this differ from an internal sound card? Would I disable the integrated sound? How much power does this have; enough to drive a set off stereo headphones?
