I have a roommate in the house where I live
and unfortunately the Internet contract is between him
and Telus. He refuses to fix a problem one of my other roommates has noticed.

He says he noticed that any password
will get him onto the Telus router and he is now afraid that this
exposes his (Windows) computer to being hacked.

I have assured him that this is not the case and the only issue
is that other people can access the Internet through the Router
who do not have the password and so the only issue is bandwidth theft.

1) Am I right?
Please explain the security issues if there are any.

2) I am running Linux (Debian Jessie) and I have already setup the computer to
connect to the Router using the proper password. There must be a way that I
can change the password to see if an incorrect password does in fact work.
But I don't know how.
Can someone tell me how to do this?

Note: Both of my roommates have mental health issues so don't count on
my being able to reason with them. :-(

Ralph
