Thanks again for the welcome and the attempts at fixing the external hard drive problem at the meeting.
I'm having another issue since earlier this year. At medium and low fan spin rates there is often a lot of whine and apparent vibration. When the fans are spinning faster, I don't hear it as much (the volume seems less and it does not always occur). When I tap the laptop the vibration/whine seems to stop for a while before recurring. To check if it was just other sounds covering the fan noise at higher RPM, I played a video and paused it, while watching the fan speeds (in Gkrellm) and listening. At higher speeds, over 3000 RPM, I did not get the loud whine. At medium speeds (in the 2000+ range) I often did, but not always. Right now, at 1959 RPM on both, I hear some noise, but not the sound of major vibration. Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad T420i 4 gb RAM OS: Linux Mint 17 Quiana Temperatures are in the low 40s right now, but sometimes approach 50 c. Previously, I had Windows 7 something or other and Mint 14, the latter was out of date. Is this at all related to the BIOS or the OS, or is it a hardware problem? _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list clug-talk@clug.ca http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying
