One thing I could suggest is providing them with some reading/reference
material.  I know there are some free ebook type things out their
focusing on the basics of linux, etc.  You might also get some ideas
from I think the site is called opencourseware.  If memory serves me
correctly there is an organization offering free linux training that
would be a start to prepare you for the LPI exam.  I can't recall the
agnecy name but I read about it in Linux Format....they may have
something on their webpage.  You could also add some information about
certifications as a way to legitimize the idea of why Linux.
Certification of various sorts seems to be all the rage nowadays.
