In Ubuntu the program is called ufw. Firestarter and fwbuilder are two GUI
front ends that I have heard of, though I have not used them.

You don't really need to worry about IPv6 since your ISP does not make use
of IPv6 and your router probably doesn't either. Unless you manually set
up an IPv6 tunnel with sixxs.net or tunnelbroker.net, you are not using
IPv6. Even if you are using an IPv6 tunnel, the vast majority of your
traffic will not be using IPv6. In measuring this at my house, only Google
services and the stuff that I do seems to make use of IPv6. IPv4 is going
to be with us for some time yet.

What are you trying to do? For the most part, a modern default desktop
Linux install does not enable listening services, so a firewall does not
really do anything. Before we jump to solutions it would help to know what
the problem you are trying to solve is :) Contrary to what the marketing
groups at Symantec and Network Associates would have you believe, a
firewall has specific threats that it helps to protect against, and almost
none of them are relevant to a home user.

For learning about networking, there is a simply fantastic guide at
lartc.org. Everything you could possibly want to do with a Linux box and a
(or many) network connection(s) is covered there. For more general
networking concepts and practice, the Network Warrior book published by
O'Reilly is really well done, though it is targeted at IT pros. The TCP/IP
guide is also fantastic (I reviewed this for CLUG many years ago, and liked
it so much that I bought my own copy).
