This problem was a direct result of my anti-spam measures (primarily
DMARC), and email providers who actually verify inbound messages. Gmail is
one of those providers. I have since relaxed my DMARC settings since this
was impacting my communications on other lists and a couple of vendors.

Too much of the Internet relies on technology built by people with a very
different perspective and set of base assumptions. These people are now
mostly dead or retired. The current tech culture is not really going to
help since it just funnels people and money into creating Unicorns
(twitter, Pinterest, Whats App etc.) and not actually improving the core
technologies that everyone (including the startups) relies on. You can't
pitch SMTP improvements (or anything else that we actually need) to VC as
there is no exit strategy for core, open standards based, federated systems.

Sorry for straying way OT on this, it is possible that I have strong
opinions on this (this probably surprises exactly no one).
