The mailing list is about as standard and simple as it gets.  In fact this
is a problem if you have your own domain and do things like DMARC
(combination of DKIM and SPF) or use some of the better "free" options.

What happens is that messages that get sent to the list are resent, however
the old software (mailman IIRC) is not aware of these modern practices, and
so messages are relayed out which may trigger spam filtering.  I had to
dial down the strictness of my DMARC settings because my messages were
getting flagged as SPAM for some people.  Under the hood email is a
surprisingly complicated thing in the modern world.  It might help to know
the domain of the messages that he is sending from.  Someone on this list
might be able to spot something obvious.  Otherwise he will have to engage
his email provider.

If your boyfriend uses GMail, Yahoo, or a high quality email provider, then
it is a possibility that there are messages sitting in his SPAM folder.
