Last night, I bought, from London Drugs, a 1 TB Verbatim external drive for
backup of files from an old tower that I want to donate.

It is detected by the OS on both the old tower and my ThinkPad, both of
which run Linux Mint 14 with Mate desktop.

I only saw one of the partitions, with 16 GB free. KDE partition manager,
when I got it to run, showed the full disk, and an 'msdos' partition
formatted FAT32. The larger space does not appear in Mint's file management
GUI tools.

Under Windows 7 (yes, I know) the full space appears. I can use the
Windows storage management tools to display the various partitions. I
formatted some unallocated space as FAT32 and was able to both see it and
create a new directory in it.

Considering doing a full wipe and partition might cause difficulties if I
want to switch it for another, what are your thoughts on the best way to
proceed? I may want to use this with Windows, but am more concerned with
getting it to function on Linux, with Truecrypt, etc.

I have Nepomuk backup installed, but have never used it.

Suggestions appreciated.
