I am not sure if there is a solution that does both so I am open to
suggestions for more then one product. Here is what I am trying to do.
 If what I am writing doesn't make sense it is likely due to lack of sleep.

Below is a list of the hardware involved & what I see as the 2 parts to
the solution:
* Clients: Linux, Windows, Mac & Android
* NAS: D-Link DNS-323 (2x 2TB in Mirror RAID)
* Router: NetGear WNR3500L
* External Drive: 2TB USB 3.0
* Linux Server: CentOS (virtualized Windows Server 2003?)

1) Synchronization:
Would like to find a cross-platform (L/W/M & mobile if possible)
solution to keep data on my various devices synchronized to the
appropriate folders (i.e. Home Drive) on the NAS.

In what I have researched so far, OwnCloud looks like it might work on
some level for this part. I would install it on the Linux Server with
the data repository being on the NAS. This should allow me to directly
access the home drive over the network for devices in the house. I am
willing to look at a two-way sync piece in their if needed for mobile
devices/laptops.

Am I missing something here?

2) Backup:
All data is currently located on the NAS that I access via shares over
the LAN. Some data is local to the various machines, but if the sync
portion above works then this should be a moot point.

I am planning to add a hard drive enclosure with a 2TB drive in it,
which will allow for expandability as data grows. This will be my
primary backup to the NAS & both will be located in different parts of
the house. NAS is downstairs & backup drive will likely be located
upstairs. I am planning to attach it to the back of the router via USB
3.0 as the router allows you to share out a device via a weblink.

I would like to see this as a live synch...essentially I make a change
one place & it is potentially reflected back immediately. I call this
my "Oh Crap! Drive." Essentially if the house is on fire & we need to
get out quick I can grab that drive & go without having to try ^ get
downstairs to retrieve the NAS if the way was blocked (i.e. flood).

I would also like to have a separate external drive as a back up to teh
backup that might get done say weekly & then placed in a water/fireproof
safe or taken off-site.

I have been researching this off & on & haven't found the proper mix of
what I want so figured I would query the group.

I have heard mention of gluster which might serve part of the solution.
 I have also tried a few desktop sync products but can never seem to get
them working across the network to the SMB share currently on the NAS.

This raises to mind another point about file system on the various
drives & about how encryption might fit into the mix & affect things.

I hope I have given enough info with out giving to much. I am trying to
explain it as if we were sitting having a coffee talking about it. If
you need an clarifiers please let me know.
