I wonder if this is similar to what happened to me. I was doing some updates on my kubuntu 11.10 box & my address books disappeared. I am using the Goggle Contacts extension.
I have uninstalled & re-installed; deleted the contents of the folder in the Thunderbird folder; disabled, re-enabled; restarted, etc. & it is gone. It was there initially but when I tried to rename the address books they disappeared.
