I just installed Kubuntu 11.04 dual-boot with Win 7 on a laptop & it all seemed pretty straight forward even from a newby standpoint. I would likley recommend using the live boot option first to make sure that his hardware is detected before he installs it. As well...the first rule of installing anything...backup, backup, backup.

I am sure anyone would be happy to sit with him at the next meeting & help him out. Hey...could even make that into a presentation...LOL! Seriously though...that is what it is all about & that is the best way to evangelize & win souls (so to speak). I am not sure if I will be able to make it to the next meeting or not, but if I am there I can help out.

Hello All,

My friend has burnt ubuntu 11.04 live DVD and can try it out. I
suggested that it might be wise to wait to install it till after coming

There are several choices with the live boot, try it out without
installing it, install it instead of the current operating system, or
install it in addition to the current operating system.

Is Ubuntu 11.04 sufficiently advanced to guide a new user like my friend
through a dual boot installation of Ubuntu with Windows 7 and Ubuntu
11.04 operating systems? Or should he check with someone who knows
something about dual boots before he actually installs it?

I have suggested that he come to the next CLUG meeting as a tier one
member as he has very little money. Then perhaps one of you could help
him install a dual boot safely. He has already burnt the Ubuntu 11.04
live DVD. He used the DVD because he did not have a blank CD ready, but
I see no problem with that.

I suggested that he try out Ubuntu first before committing himself, and
then coming to the meeting to get help with a safe installation.

It sounds like the default choices for installing a dual boot might
work, but I wanted to check with dual boot experts first.

Regards,

Michael
