I see two factors here: 1/ Freedom 2/ Economics Experimenting can be fun to do too.
After first trying Yggdrasil (1995) I used redhat to make my own fire wall/ router as my first practical use for GNU/Linux. Then Smoothwall/IPCop for a Keep It Simple method for clients. Now using a hardware (Linux- but modified) fire wall router. I am fascinated with WiFi and wireless networking. Especially after hearing Eben Moglen's opening talk at FOSDEM 2011. This is an older Linuxjournal article, (mesh potato is beyond prototype now). http://www.linuxjournal.com/magazine/mesh-potato http://wiki.villagetelco.org/index.php?title=Mesh_Potato_HOWTOs Anyone else interested in some sort of project, please contact me before you order hardware. Also other type of projects like https://dev.wifidog.org/wiki/About https://dev.wifidog.org Anyone else interested into looking deeoer into this stuff?? Let me know. Mel
