I see two factors here: 1/ Freedom 2/ Economics
Experimenting can be fun to do too.

After first trying Yggdrasil (1995) I used redhat to make my own fire wall/
router as my first practical use for GNU/Linux. Then Smoothwall/IPCop for a
Keep It Simple method for clients.
Now using a hardware (Linux- but modified) fire wall router.

I am fascinated with WiFi and wireless networking. Especially after hearing
Eben Moglen's opening talk at FOSDEM 2011.

This is an older Linuxjournal article, (mesh potato is beyond prototype
now).
