We use https://www.link2voip.com/ for external VoIP numbers and I was
talking to a guy that setup his smart phone to do VoIP through them so he
could make unlimited free calls. I think he had to do a change to the caller
ID also to make that work but I don't have the details.

Send me a detailed description of what you are trying to do and I will see
if it is something I know how to do or I can ask my friend. Like I told
Dafydd, you may have faster results if you ask some of the CLUG'ers that are
close by.

Link2Voip also has a service where they host and operate your Asterisk phone
server for you, then all you need is some VoIP devices. You can you PAP
device like the Linksys PAP2 for your old land line phones or you can run
VoIP clients on your computer like Twinkle
http://www.xs4all.nl/~mfnboer/twinkle/index.html

Almost all my calls are done through twinkle now. If my cell phone rings I
don't usually answer it, I call them back on twinkle. My cell phone bill is
$10 a month.
