Your understanding is correct. A full install of XP in the virtual box is required.
When you make the virtualmachine make sure you allocate enough hard drive memory since I don't believe this is easy to change once made (someone correct me if I'm wrong). However the amount of ram memory you want give virtual box can change every time you start it up. You can share folders with the virtualmachine so for example you can share your linux music folder instead of allocating a ton of space inside the vm itself. If you hold down the shift key while itunes loads, you can also change where you store the itunes library file, and all the corresponding album art, etc..
