It's not possible to use a recent version of itunes without VirtualBox. :(

That being said, the USB support through virtualbox is much better
than it used to be. I manage to sync my ipod that way without any
trouble. You can even set it up to automount your ipod into the
windows virtual machine. Make sure to download the closed source
version of the Sun site since it has better USB support.

Amarok, Rhythmbox, & Songbird all work with ipods. In fact, I would
say they are all better than itunes. However you miss out on some
important features like Genius playlists, the itunes store, etc...
that only work with itunes. :(

Anyone else with better ideas?
