Reinstalling is certainly an option, but it is also a longer process. If the system has not been used at all, it is cheaper in time resource to change the password. Yes, GUI tools exist mount the drive. In fact, the most recent versions of Knoppix and Ubuntu should provide an icon on the desktop that will do the job auto-magically if I remember correctly. That said, using a GUI is not as universal / portable of process as doing the password change via the command line. Changing a Unix root password via commandline is a good skill to have if you will be servicing a Linux laptop / workstation / etc. That's my personal view / opinion on the subject, so take it as you see fit. If you wish to try the commandline process, see the following links. See this link for how to mount a hard drive: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount ...and these links for how to deal with logical volumes (LVM) http://www.linux.com/archive/articles/142673 http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/how-to-easily-mount-a-fedora-lvm-in-a-running-ubuntu-debian-682411/ Be careful not to run any partition or volume creation commands, and that you don't format the drive.
