iTunes also sometimes installs this on Windows machines.  Bonjour is the
Apple trademarked name, but the whole scheme is usually called "Zero
Configuration" or zeroconf.  I can see why this was created, though it
seems to me to be a solution in search of a problem.

On wifi networks it is more trouble than it is worth since that constant
stream of traffic will significantly reduce your available bandwidth and
those of your neighbours using nearby channels.  Modern wire based
networks will not noticeably degrade with Bonjour or zeroconf, but
wireless ones will.
