Now don't I feel stupid. Stumbled across this link today thanks to the lxer.com news feed. I routinely edit things with Nano, and never once thought about looking to see if it could be tweaked. Looking through the /etc/nanorc file shows a number of useful options in there - like auto-indent... Just goes to show we should be "questioning" every tool we use....
