The Goons [1] knew about the attempt, and I think that one of the two 
people that presented this was a Goon.  But from what I understand, this 
had nothing to do with external vendors, and didn't need any inside 
knowledge or connections to pull off.

[1] A Goon is a red shirt at DefCon and responsible for crowd control 
and security.  (aka Bouncers - at the most basic description)  Some 
goons are multi-hatted and also take part in other aspects of the DefCon 
staff.
