In the make menuconfig, you should be able to search for IEEE80211. (I
think you do a search with the slash key '/') You might see this in
multiple locations.

To disable it, you should see "[ ]" to mean the option is not selected,
"[*]" to mean the option will be compiled into the kernel, or "[M]" to
mean the option will be compiled as a module. Some options will not
allow you to compile as a module, or may only allow a module. Sometimes
these are dependant on the settings of other options. For instance, if
you have said to compile networking into the kernel, any networking
drivers, would also need to be compiled into the kernel. (not saying
this IS the case, just showing an example). If the above were the case,
then changing networking to be a module, *should* allow you to select
your driver as a module.

Failing that, you could always boot with the Gentoo install CD and use
lsmod to take a look at what modules you might need. (assuming the
install CD detects your wireless on boot.)

Oh, and did you check the gentoo forums for ipw3945?
(http://forum.gentoo.org just did a search for ipw3945, and there's a
number of hits). THere's normally more gentoo specific help there than
google. And OH again, check gentoo-wiki.com. I've found it sometimes
has a nice guide detailing exactly what I'm trying to do.. sometimes...

HTH.
