You need the DNS entries anyway. Apache will probably need to be configured to make use of the subdomain, likely a vhost entry. Personally I have a mod rewrite rule that works automatically, as long as I create the physical folder structure as well as the DNS entry (basically I save myself from reconfiguring Apache every time I add a subdomain).
