This seems to be an odd choice for Shaw, but right now I don't really have a problem with it. I'm already forwarding my outgoing mail through their servers. You see, my static IP had been listed on SPEWS via collateral damage. (*someone* on the class C subnet sent spam, SPEWS listed the entire range, rather than the offending IP). Unfortunately, SPEWS is used by a large number of organizations, even though it is one of the MOST unprofessional and moronic organizations. (They're policy on getting your IP unlisted goes along the lines of "get your ISP to block port 25 THEN we'll unlist your IP". So, sending mail to various contacts would result in my messages getting outright rejected or at least tagged as spam. Needless to say, some important stuff didn't get through.
By forwarding OUTBOUND port 25 through their servers, SHAW can at least manage that one server, and not have to worry about whole IP ranges where they have little control. At least until SPEWS decides to just list all IPs as spammers. On the otherhand, I can see where this could be troublesome. To mandate such a change can lead to issues. In my case, I just told my mail server to relay through Shaw's. but I still have full control of the traffic coming to my firewall, or leaving it. hmmmm... maybe there is a business opportunity here for CLUG members? provide an ISP that works the way WE would expect it? :) Shawn Gustin Johnson wrote: > Shaw will be redirecting all outbound connections on port 25 to their > own mail servers.
