I wonder if it's trying to do something that needs root permission...

You could try starting firefox from the command line as root, and see if the 
process works then...  something like "sudo firefox" should do the trick.

It's the little things like this that I don't like about Ubuntu.  Otherwise, I 
think it's a great distro...:)
