Not sure what the question here is?  Does alsamixer display settings for
an audio card?

What does lsmod |grep snd output?

This is an audio locking issue I believe.  Make sure that all audio
daemons are off.  Also, the OLD OSS would only allow one program to
access the hardware at a time.  The newer alsa modules are much better
at sharing the hardware.

Not sure about this.  Maybe try a live CD to see how the USB performs.

I am becoming a big fan of kubuntu on the desktop.  It has recent
versions of KDE and xorg, with a lot of the advantages of Debian.  I
also, uh, don't like GNOME, so if you are sold on gnome, then ubuntu may
be to your liking.  I have been particularly impressed with the
ubuntu/kubuntu handling of usb storage devices.
