I don't have Gnome installed at the moment (I assume you're using Gnome with Ubuntu?) but when I was running FC I had Gnome. I remember having to tell Gnome to automatically mount new media when it's inserted. I wish I could remember where I set that, but it's been so long since I used Gnome. Is there some kind of control centre? I'd poke around in there. I definitely remember that it was a checkbox labelled something like 'automatically mount new media when inserted'. Hope that helps.
