Accurate call Gustin. I use both proprietary and FOSS depending on which machine I'm in front of at the time. This is a classic example of "don't shoot the messenger". My comments were directed towards the content of the message not the means by which it arrived.
The intent of my message was simply to point out that CLUG-Talk is supposed to be focused on Linux and FOSS related content. It's a technical resource for those seeking guidance or providing assistance to the members. If you look back into the archive you'll see that there is a high "Signal to Noise" ratio where the content of the messages have little or nothing to do with the original intent of the list. There are other venues that are more appropriate for some of the discussions that run here. As suggested, if a topic is not in keeping with the original intent of the list why not take the responses off-list? A simple question and a request for direct, off-list responses, goes a long way to clean things up AND improve the content of the list. The intent here is not to "control" the list but to focus the list on the real reason we are here. Hopefully the quality of content will improve somewhat. As for the social aspect of CLUG, there's always the website where members are free to create their own personal blogs with whatever content they wish to add. Heck, my Telus rant is proof of that. :-) As well, there's always my earlier suggestion.
