Its all in .xsession
Here is an example of my root accounts .xsession:
exec xfwm


I normally use kde but when logging in as root I don't need all the bells and 
whistles, I just need to get in and fix something quick.  

I don't use any graphical manager as I tend to experiment quite a bit.  I also 
like the console login, then run startx -- :n where n is the number of the 
screen I am using.
