Hi,
If anyone is looking for a suitable computer for IPcop you might want to check out the following on Vfxweb's web site:
http://www.vfxweb.com/index.asp?action=itemv&ia=details&ItemId=6780

This is a Pentium 2 400 meg computer with 64 meg of ram 2 gig hard drive and a built in 10/100 ethernet port. There are 2 spare PCI slots which can be used for additional ethernet cards so that you can have a red, green and orange interface.
(VFXweb also has some 10BT pci ethernet cards for $0.45 each and some 10/100 cards for under $10.00.

The price of the computer is $29.00 (before CLUG discount).
What is great about these computers is the small form factor. The overall dimensions are 15 inches deep by 12.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches high.

If you are wondering why the price is so low, well here is the downside. They do not come with a CD drive and do not have the space to install a regular CD drive. There is however a 40 pin IDE connector and it is possible to hook up a regular CD drive while the case is opened, and use it to install IPcop. After IPcop is installed (which only takes a few minutes) there is no need for a CD drive as all updates etc can be installed remotely.

These machines might also be useful for setting up a web or mail server.

If you do intend to use one of these computers as a server, there is one small change that you should make. In the standard configuration you are required to to press the on/off switch to start the computer when power is applied. This would mean that if you had a power failure you would need to manually re-start the computer. Not too good for an unattended firewall. The problem can be corrected by changing a dip switch on the mother board to allow the computer to start automatically when AC power is applied. The details of this change are shown on a label attached to the inside of the cover.

While I would not recommend these machines for a desktop with GUI interface, the small size and low price makes them ideal for a firewall or small server.

Last time I checked VFXweb had about 95 of these units in stock

Hello all,

My brother has offered to let me keep on semipermanent loan a Hewlett Packard
Pentium 133 MHz computer with a CD ROM drive which can install IP Cop. He
also said that it would be an ideal firewall computer.

I will read the documentation on the IP Cop CD when I have time.

I will also start the Hewlett Packard computer up to see how it runs and what
operating system is on it now. Again, I will do that when I have time.

The first time I will have time to do that will be next Monday.

Regards,

Michael
