Oops! I keep sending these to the old clug addy. --------------- Jesse wrote: > > Laptops often use wierd hardware, so it is possible that some of your > hardware just isn't supported. Jesse; Thanks for the pointers. The linux-laptop.net URL will come in handy. Re; SPM the kernel states that it has it - "2.4...SPM" as the default kernel installed by the Suse ftp setup. For a new twist, I was fiddling with the laptop last night and this morning and on a hunch I tried booting into failsafe mode (from memory = no acip no apm no spm maxcpus 0 3 plus a few other "no"'s in there. While watching the bootup log, eth0 went through its ".........." routine and then popped up an IP 64.185.202.211 (also from memory). X was not set up to start immediately, but the command prompt was something like "h68.185.202.211#". So now I know I can get dhcp to work and the onboard NIC does work. Unfortunately, right after that my time ran out and I had to head out to the office. So now it is a matter of figuring out which of the "no"'s (or what combination of no's) from the failsafe mode allows the machine to grab an IP #. Once I have that, I can recompile the kernel without it. Then I can d'load the nVidia driver for the sound and then set up the other rpms and programs. [newbie question] Also, when I go to kernel.org, the site notes that the latest stable kernel is 2.6.3. But when I click on it to d'load it, the file to download has "patch" in the filename. This is not the full kernel correct? Where would I find the full kernel then?
