So, scripts/vm/systemvm/injectkeys.sh is 755, but when it's copied to client/target/* the permissions are changed to 644. This is not honoured by the ant run plugin, we could have used the maven assembly plugin. A quick fix is indeed to chmod +x the files, or explicitly chmod the file within client/pom.xml. !patch welcome
