There are several things going on here, and I'd need to see the rest of the
code to provide more accurate feedback. In general though, I'd try to stay
away from <!! in any tight inner loop that you expect to run at a regular
interval. Instead I'd put data into an atom and use (deref) inside the
tight loop. Or user async/poll if I really needed to interact with a
channel.
