When I know I'm dealing with a counted collection, like vector, then for performance I test for empty with (zero? (count v)).
It would be nice if empty? were more polymorphic, but I'm not sure how that would affect performance - might make things worse for the common case. Certainly in the general case, the current implementation of empty? is the only real way to do it.
