Or maybe more some hardcore concurrency stuff from the STM: https://github.com/clojure/clojure/blob/master/src/jvm/clojure/lang/LockingTransaction.java#L256 that also according to blame is basically untouched since 2009. Impression of complexity is subjective though, someone else could give different answers.
