loosely related to this old thread, today I have read that github has worked out a way to stick a DOI ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_object_identifier ) to a repository: https://github.com/blog/1840-improving-github-for-science it was on HN, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7744735 .
