Mikera, you hit on exactly what I was trying to say. Great post. I wonder what the feasibility would be to do what you and I are suggesting... It seems like it would take a while to get implemented, if it ever were implemented. Heaven knows I don't want to "get down and dirty with the compiler" like you say. At least not with the Clojure one (getting down and dirty with the Scheme compiler is coming up next in my SICP tour :D ).
