Nothing to do with try - clojure is trying to compile the whole top-level 
form.  Same thing happens with any top-level form (other than do, which is 
special).

user> (do (intern *ns* 'foo 23) foo)
23
user> (when true (intern *ns* 'bar 44) bar)
; Evaluation aborted.
