Maybe something like this:
Java for Programmers [Paperback]
Paul J. Deitel (Author), Harvey M. Deitel (Author)

You can start with the basics of the language and then move on to
using the libraries as needed. The docs api (linked above) is a great
reference but not a place for learning how to use those APIs.
