I don't know about that. I've been teaching a young'un Clojure without ever mentioning anything about Java. Knowing a bit about the JVM and .jar files and such might be helpful in setting things up initially, and certainly Java libraries (both standard and third-party) can come in handy to solve certain kinds of problems; but even for that you don't really need to know Java the language.
