Figuring that out has taken me a long time on at least two occasions... The key is you need to be signed in to make changes. - At the upper right of the page is "sign in". Use that to sign in to your Google account. - A "Edit" button will appear at the top right of the left column. Press it. - There will be a few "tools" now at the upper let side of the map's display including the "add a placemark" tool.
