I haven't checked whether your suggested solution would work, but I'd be *very* happy to find all stddout-like output from the backend in the REPL-buffer.
If I may add this: having different threads' output somehow highlighted, e.g. with colors, would be a killer. But then the wishing time has just closed and the next xmas is a good way to go.
