I also vote for static analysis. People have combined static analysis with data mining to predict software defects. http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=data+mining+software+defects&btnG=Search&as_sdt=2000&as_ylo=&as_vis=0 However, it doesn't look like anyone's tried it with any functional languages.
