You can still use SLIME; just avoid the slime-autodoc contrib. Use (slime-setup '(slime-repl)) to initialize SLIME. At least, this works for me. Make sure you don't use (slime-setup '(slime-fancy)), because slime-fancy includes slime- autodoc.
