I'm using those books to learn Java right now. They are suitable as a
tutorial and as a reference, and they include useful extracts from
Java doc.  I'm making my way through from the start, but also using
them as a reference while converting a CL app to Java.  Version 3 will
be written in Clojure:-)

For your purposes, chapters 1-6, 10-14 of Volume I would get you far
down the path.  7-9 are on graphics and Swing.  Good stuff, but maybe
not suitable for your desire to get up to speed quickly.

Sun's online tutorials are also very good.
