Turns out ancestors works on the class, not the instance:
> (ancestors ArithmeticException)
#{java.lang.Throwable java.io.Serializable java.lang.Exception
java.lang.RuntimeException java.lang.Object}

> (ancestors (new ArithmeticException))
nil
