If I understand correctly, ending a function name with an exclamation point is a way to indicate that the function changes the value of one of its arguments. This is similar to the convention of ending function names with a question mark if they have a boolean result.
Is there a reason that the reset! and swap! functions for changing the value of an atom end in an exclamation point, but the alter and commute functions for changing the value of a ref do not? -- R.
