The "works" and "doesn't work" cases you posted appear to be identical.I believe there can be nothing about the SQL in the string that would have any bearing on scrapbook/db-read being defined or not. What could have that effect would be forgetting to close one of the parentheses in the definition of db-read before calling it.
Are you using an editor that helps out with matching parentheses? --Steve
