For what its worth, I've had a similar setup working on Mac OS X 10.5:

Aquamacs
SLIME
jogl-1.1.1

I'm pretty sure I'm running Java 1.6 (can't check now). I had no
issues with hangs. Perhaps QT is the bad ingredient.
