Yeah, you're probably right. It's the "or something like it" that's the kicker. Python, just to pick an example at random, has something on the order of a half-dozen APIs for shelling out, and none of them are particularly pleasant. I'll try to make some time eventually to think about what set of shelling-out functions might be useful.
